Kota Open University was established on 23 July 1987. It came into being as a part of the Open University network for India. The University headquarters are located in Kota and its jurisdiction of operations extends over the whole state of Rajasthan in India. 3 The distinctive features of the University are:3 - Advancement and dissemination of learning and knowledge by a diversity of means3 - Provide opportunities for higher education to all segments of society in the State of Rajasthan who are not able to use conventional systems

- To promote the educational well being of the society in general

- To produce trained manpower as per the needs of a developing society

- To cater rural areas with quality higher education

- To make higher education cost effective so that the real democratisation of higher education can take place in the state.

Admission:
Admission is open to residents of India particularly Rajasthan and aged 18 years or over. Applicants who have passed the Intermediate exam conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education, or possess equivalent qualification, have direct admission to the academic programmes. Those without any formal qualifications have to pass the eligibility test conducted by the University.

Services:
Printed correspondence texts form the main basis of the instructional materials. Depending on the course, students may also receive other materials including audio and video cassettes, and case/exercise kits. Tutorials/group discussion, extension lectures, and face-to-face counselling are also offered. The University also has six regional centres in Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Ajmer and Bikaner and 33 study centres. It is hoped that in the future the University will have study centres in all the district headquarters of Rajasthan.

Registration:
Registration period starts in October/November and the session starts from forthcoming January. Applicants must fill in an admission form and send it to the Director of the regional centre concerned. In addition, eligible students are also required to pay a programme fee.

Statistical summary:
In 1996-97, Kota Open University had about 10,000 students enrolled. During the same year the full-time and part-time teaching staff numbered 27 and 2,220 respectively. The University is funded by the local state government, Distance Education Council and own resources and for the period 1997-98 the budget was 94.71 million Indian rupees.
